Hiking Companions in Nepal
Nepal is the world's premier hiking destination, but not every hike requires a 14-day commitment. The Kathmandu Valley alone has dozens of spectacular day hikes: Shivapuri National Park to Nagi Gompa, Champadevi (2,285 m) for Himalayan views, Phulchowki (2,762 m, the highest peak around the Valley), Nagarkot to Dhulikhel via the Helambu trail, Kakani to Budhanilkantha. Pokhara has Sarangkot, the Australian Camp, and the World Peace Pagoda. A verified SangiNepal hiking companion knows these trails, can arrange transport to the trailhead, will carry first aid and extra water, and is genuinely fun to spend a day with. For longer treks (Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang, Helambu, Mardi Himal), the same companion can join you for the full duration β book the first day via the platform, then negotiate a daily rate via messaging.

What's the difference between a hike and a trek in Nepal?
A hike is a day trip β start in the morning, back by evening. A trek is multi-day, with overnight stays in tea houses or camping. Nepal's classic treks (Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, Langtang) take 7-21 days. Day hikes around Kathmandu Valley take 4-8 hours.
Do I need a permit to hike with a companion?
For day hikes around Kathmandu Valley (Shivapuri, Champadevi, Phulchowki, Nagarkot), you need a national park entry permit (Rs. 100-1,000 depending on the park). For multi-day treks, you need a TIMS card and a conservation area permit. Your companion can help you arrange both at the Nepal Tourism Board.
What should I bring on a day hike?
Sturdy shoes, 2L of water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, light rain jacket (weather changes fast in the hills), small backpack, and your phone. Your companion carries a first aid kit and an extra water filter.
